SEOUL, Aug. 8 (Yonhap) -- “With right set of mind and never let go of your dream, I think there could more lawyer like the protagonist Woo Young-woo from the famous South Korean drama ‘Extraordinary Attorney Woo.’ The continuous effort to understand and to switch places with objects to seek a different angle is what makes a lawyer extraordinary.” South Korean lawyer Shin Min-young described her perspective of what makes a lawyer extraordinary.

South Korean broadcasting service ENA’s drama airing every Wednesday and Thursday “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” is about autistic lawyer Woo Young-Woo who matures throughout her time working at a law firm. Although the drama focuses heavily on the protagonist overcoming bias opinions about her disability but some of the critics shed the light on the accurate portrayal of trial and judicial process.

South Korean lawyer Shin Min-young is considered to be one of the modeled lawyers of “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” some of the cases he took during his time as a public defender was featured in episodes one, three, six and ten which can also be found on his book “Why Do I Defend Them” released in 2016. According to lawyer Shin Min-young, “As a lawyer I could not stand trail dramas due to the irrelevance and how the trial derails into emotional madness which made me cringe.”

“Colleagues and I talk about “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” a lot, mainly on how well the process of trial and the details of the court was portrayed throughout the drama. However the controversy of whether the autistic lawyer can exist was never brought up by among our colleagues.” said attorney Shin Min-youg during the interview.

Drama “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” became popular through word of mouth by portraying the process of proving without being tampered by emotion. One of the reason how “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” managed to depict the real process of the trail, and every little details along the line of court is because attorney Shin Min-young worked as a research advisor for the drama.

Producer Yoo In-sik requested lawyer Shin Min-young to help out with the details at the filming scene. Hence Shin Min-young gave an advice how in court, in order to make a stance or talk you have to turn on the mic so that the red light will laminate before making an announcement. “I was proud of that scene.” said lawyer Shin Min-young adding “The advice I gave on the scene where he yells, objection your honor, did not get reflected.” lawyer chuckled. “In reality, the atmosphere of the court isn’t as fierce and we lawyers do not interrupt others or make comments while the opponent is making a statement. Even if we do have something to say we tend to submit a written statement instead of colliding with the opponent at the scene.” lawyer Shin Min-young described about the process and the atmosphere of the court.

Protagonist Woo Young-woo was recognized with her talent by her supervising attorney by shining the light on the problem existing within the law of succession of civil law through the attempted murder case of wife of an elderly couple featured on the first episode of “Extraordinary Attorney Woo.”

“The life of a wife is not an important factor if seen in a perspective to condemn her. However, I wanted to find something from the perspective of the elderly wife that’s when the problem regarding the system of civil law came up. The elderly wife lives off of the husband’s retirement fund, if she doesn’t get inherited with the fund, she will be faced with financial deficit. Seeking the truth through different perspectives, sometimes offers they key to the case.” said attorney Shin Min-young during the interview.

When asked for an advice to those who wants to become a lawyer in the future, lawyer Shin Min-young stated and chuckled “Never trust everything you see on the drama.” adding “However, in my perspective lawyer is a very unique occupation. The fact that lawyers can make a living off of help others and deal with nature of things is a blessing. However, take into consideration that its getting harder every moment.”
