SEOUL, Mar. 15 (Yonhap) -- The city of Wonju in Gangwon Province will open its first dog shelter “Aruemdeul” on Wednesday.

Wonju Agricultural Technology Center will operate its very first dog shelter, located in Heungup-ri, Heungup-myeon, for eight months until Nov. 14. It will serve as a facility promoting the welfare of pets and those who have pets, and to help develop a mature pet culture in Korea.

The shelter will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends and holidays. It will be closed every Monday and public holidays and may be temporarily closed in case of poor weather conditions.

It is expected to be closed during the winter season (Nov. 15, 2023 to Mar. 15, 2024) in order to remove the snow and prevent any possible safety accidents.

An official from Wonju City said, “Only registered dogs will be able to use our facility due to the Animal Protection Act,” adding, “Please follow our rules such as wearing a leash or harness as well as cleaning up after your dog.”
