SEOUL, Apr. 26 (Yonhap) -- K-pop powerhouse SM Entertainment has acquired Studio Clon, a tech firm specializing in post-production, or the second half of the work, the agency confirmed Wednesday.
The agency’s subsidiary Studio Kwangya, which produces content for its virtual metaverse, acquired a total of 51 percent stake in Studio Clon, incorporating the tech firm into its subsidiary.
Studio Clon was established in 2011 and has since been providing comprehensive services for post-production, including video content editing and mixing. The studio has been working on more than 2,300 works annually.
In regards to the recent acquisition, the agency said, “We acquired Studio Clon in order to strengthen our metaverse and content capabilities, which have been announced as one of the key areas among the five themes we have announced as part of SM 3.0 strategies last February,” adding that the acquisition demonstrates their ongoing and rapid moves on pursuing the SM 3.0 strategy.
SM Entertainment also plans to enhance its virtual intellectual property rights, including virtual human and virtual reality, by adding Studio Clon’s technology to the virtual human and visual special effects technologies Studio Kwangya already owns. In addition, the K-pop powerhouse is also looking forward to using its already accumulated intellectual property rights, with which it led the K-pop craze, as the firm’s data for diverse future content.
