SEOUL, Sept. 17 (Yonhap) -- The Korea Heritage Service (KHS) said Wednesday it has selected 15 items, including Jeju’s traditional family feast and food culture, for next year’s “future intangible heritage discovery and fostering project.”

 

The Jeju family feast and food culture refers to the island’s long-standing banquet traditions, which include preparing food for weddings, various events and games. They will be the subject of research and documentation.

 

Other selected items include a communal performance and folk game held by residents of Mujang-eup Fortress in Gochang, North Jeolla Province, on Chilseok (the seventh day of the seventh lunar month), as well as the Sajikdan rite in Namwon to honor deities of land and grain.

 

Research will also be conducted on Jinju’s ceremonial dish “Hwaban,” which literally means “flower rice,” focusing on historical verification and documentation.

This year’s supported items will also be presented through exhibitions and hands-on programs. On Sept. 19, a reenactment of the Dolmosan Dangsan rite in Buan will be held at the county office square, while an academic conference on traditional paper flowers used in Buddhist rituals will take place Sept. 20 at the Seoul Museum of Craft Art.

 

The project aims to identify cultural assets not yet designated as intangible heritage, nurture them as representative resources, and establish sustainable transmission systems. Each item can receive up to 200 million won (US$145,000) in annual funding, with support extendable up to three years depending on progress.
