SEOUL, Aug. 5 (Yonhap) -- Actor Yoo Yeon-seok's appeal against a tax assessment of about 3 billion won (US$2.2 million) has been rejected by the Tax Tribunal, despite his challenge to the National Tax Service's decision, his agency said Wednesday.

According to King Kong by Starship, the Tax Tribunal dismissed last month Yoo's appeal seeking to overturn the tax authority's decision to impose additional taxes totaling more than 3 billion won.

"The case stems from differences in the interpretation and application of tax laws," the agency said. "The related procedures have not yet been fully concluded."

Last year, Yoo was notified of an additional tax assessment of about 7 billion won in connection with the operation of his one-person corporation.

After requesting a pre-assessment review, he succeeded in having the tax authorities recognize double taxation, reducing the final amount to about 3 billion won.

Yoo paid the full amount before filing an appeal with the Tax Tribunal challenging the National Tax Service's assessment.

Some observers have speculated that Yoo could file an administrative lawsuit.

The agency said it is closely reviewing the facts and legal issues and will "faithfully respond in accordance with the procedures prescribed by relevant laws if necessary."

"Yoo Yeon-seok has faithfully fulfilled his tax obligations and will continue to approach the related procedures responsibly," it added.
