SEOUL, Dec. 31 (Yonhap) -- Veteran actor Ahn Sung-ki was rushed to a hospital in a state of cardiac arrest and is currently in critical condition, sources said Wednesday.
Ahn was moved to the emergency room as of around 4 p.m. Tuesday after collapsing while choking on food at his home.
The actor was admitted to an intensive care unit, according to the sources.
The 73-year-old has appeared in approximately 140 films during his career spanning over six decades.
Ahn, often called the "Nation's Actor" for his contributions to the industry, debuted in 1957 in "The Twilight Train" as a child actor.
He went on to build one of the most prolific careers in Korean cinema, earning widespread recognition through roles in films including "Silmido" (2003), "Hanbando" (2006), "Unbowed" (2011) and "Hansan: Rising Dragon" (2022).
He was named Best Actor numerous times at local film awards, including the Baeksang Arts Awards and the Blue Dragon Film Awards.
Beyond his acting career, he has served as a representative for UNICEF since the early 1990s.
During a 2022 interview, he revealed that he had been battling with blood cancer since 2019.
