SEOUL, Feb. 4 (Yonhap) -- The National Museum of Korea announced on Tuesday that it will host an event titled "Celadon Sculptures: Reinterpretation and Expansion of Tradition" this weekend in Seoul.
To be held at Lecture Room 1 of the museum's education center, the event will focus on the unique celadon sculptures of the Goryeo Dynasty, renowned for their exquisite jade-green glaze.
Celadon sculptures (sanghyeong cheongja) are ceramic pieces crafted in the shapes of people, animals, plants, and other forms. The delicate yet brilliant bisaek (jade-green hue) of Goryeo celadon is considered one of the finest achievements of traditional Korean craftsmanship.
Discussions will center on how these celadon sculptures can be reinterpreted and imbued with new meaning. Lee Ae-ryeong, head of the museum's Curatorial Research Division and an expert in ceramic history, will explore the open-minded and flexible cultural attitude of Goryeo artisans and their creative adaptations reflected in celadon sculptures.
Jung Ku-ho, a cultural creator active in design, performance directing, and artistic curation, will highlight the cultural potential of Goryeo celadon sculptures and emphasize the need for further research and promotion.
Lim Mi-seon, artistic director of the Craft Biennale and an expert in craft exhibition planning, will discuss how contemporary artists perceive and apply traditional elements, as well as the significance of heritage in modern artistic expression.
The event is open to the public. A museum representative stated, "We hope this event will raise public interest in Goryeo celadon sculptures and serve as an inspiration for creators."
