SEOUL, Aug. 19 (Yonhap) -- As the performances of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese idol trainees, who have gathered together with the goal of debuting as a global K-pop girl group, were unveiled, it has drawn much attention to the first broadcast of "Girls Planet 999."

"Girl's Planet 999: The Girls Saga" is a South Korean audition show in which 33 trainees from Korea, China and Japan were selected to compete and debut as a girl group. Only nine out of the total 99 contestants will be selected as the final members of the new idol group.

According to Smart Media Rep (SMR), which distributes clips VOD (Video-on-demand) from major broadcasters to online platforms such as Naver and YouTube, the cumulative number of clips regarding Mnet's "Girl's Planet 999" was played about 7.2 million times as of Aug. 16.

The production team of "Girl's Planet 999" made sure to explain the new concept and format of the program in order to differentiate themselves from the previous idol trainee competition shows such as the "Produce 101" series.

The so-called 'Girl's Planet' refers to 'a new world that transcends boundaries and a place where 99 trainees stay together.' Viewers of the show are known as the 'Planet Guardians' and actor Yeo Jin-goo is the host and guide to 'Girl's Planet.' Meanwhile second generation K-pop idols Sunmi, a former member of Wonder Girls and Girls' Generation's Tiffany will be the K-pop masters.

A new concept of "cells" were also introduced within the show. The trainees are grouped into "cells," which consist of a total of three contestants from each culture. To survive in the competition, the cells need to compete with other cells, however, contestants in the "Planet Top 9" can also reorganize cells and choose who they want to compete next, in order to lower their chances of elimination.

K-pop Masters Sunmi and Tiffany, who evaluate the stage performances from different perspectives, were also better than expected due to their sharp but detailed feedback.

The online responses to Mnet's new girl group audition, which has returned in two years since "Produce 48," are also heating up. The first episode clip surpassed 5 million views, which is 1.3 times higher than the 3.74 million views recorded for the first episode of "Produce 48."

People in their 20s turned out to be the main demographics of "Girl's Planet 999." The share of audience was 63.2 percent for those in their 20s, 15.3 percent for teenagers, 11.8 percent for 30s, and 7.3 percent for people in their 40s.

The production team not only released clips of the actual episodes but also videos of the contestant's full version performances with minimized edits to help audiences focus on the trainee's live singing and dancing skills.

As a result, the top 10 most watched clips were selected, including five clips from the actual show and five full-version performance clips, which are all equally enjoyed by the viewers. In particular, it is also important to note that the videos of groups, who are receiving more attention from viewers, recorded high number of views.

The most watched clip was features Choi Yu-jin, a member of K-pop girl group CLC. After CLC's group activities were suspended since 2020, Choi Yu-jin came on the show to showcase her "Bubble Pop" performance, ranking No.1 with about 620,000 views.
