SEOUL, Oct. 1 (Yonhap) -- Alexander Calder (1898~1976) and Andy Warhol (1928~1987), although worked in different fields, are artists who changed the contemporary art trend with innovative productions. The two American are considered as two of the most effective artists of the 20th century.
Exhibitions featuring the masters’ works will be held in Seoul at the same time.
Alexander Calder exhibition will be opened at Pace Gallery in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul on the 5th.
Calder is the creator of mobiles and is an artist who marked a milestone in the history of sculpture. He majored engineering at college and entered the art scene later. Then he invented mobile, a balanced group of abstract pieces hanging on the ceiling and harmoniously moving by the subtle flow of the surrounding air.
The exhibition features Calder’s works produced from the 1950s to the 1970s. As for sculptures, 7 most representative pieces will be on display. Mobiles, mobile pieces made of metals, and wire and stabiles, immobile and rigid pieces, will be on display as well. Stabiles include an about 10 meter high, large-scale sculpture installed outside Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C.
Paper works will take up the most display. The works, produced in the 1960s and the 1970s, are ink and gouaches with colorful background decorated with dynamic black lines, spirals and geometric shapes. Although they are totally different forms from sculptures, the shapes in the pictures and the sculptures are well connected. The productions are collections of Calder Foundation in America, and four pieces will be on display for the first time.
The exhibition will be open until Nov. 20.
Pioneer of pop-art, Andy Warhol exhibition has begun at Espace Louis Vuitton in Cheongdam-dong Gangnam-gu Seoul on the 1st of October.
Espace Louis Vuitton is on the 4th floor of Louis Vuitton Maison Seoul and is an exhibition hall presenting collections of Louis Vuitton Foundation’s art museum as well. Previously, they have presented exhibitions for Alberto Giacometti and Gerhard Richter.
From the 1960s, Warhol worked on repeatedly printing out public images of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Jacqueline Kennedy using screen printing skills. The man who engaged in various genres, from photos, pictures, sculptures and media, also worked as a film director and producer as well.
The recent exhibition was designed focusing on Andy Warhol’s self-portraits. After presenting his first self-portrait in 1963, Warhol worked on showing ‘Warhol’ himself from various angles. Warhols in the illustrations are covering his face behind a dark, big glasses or is emphasizing the shadows more than his face. He also stood in front the of the camera, dressed like a woman, in a polaroid photo work.
His purple face looking pale but intense at the same shows the last phase of his life. In a work completed just before his unexpected death in 1987, Warhol is wearing a sliver wig and staring at the front with empty eyes.
The exhibition will be open until the 6th of February 2022.
