SEOUL, June 5 (Yonhap) -- The successors of old pine trees surrounding Uirimji, an ancient reservoir in Jecheon, North Chungcheong province are planted around Uirimji.
According to Jecheon city on the 5th, 1,500 successor trees of Uirimji Pine Trees grown in Kkotmojang, Jecheon city, Mosan-dong, will be transplanted and planted around September.
Two or three sites are being considered for transplantation, including the 1,000 square meters of municipal land under the embankment of Uirimji.
The city of Jecheon has been conducting the Uirimji Pine Tree Succession Project since 2016.
This is to replace a pine tree with the same gene if it dies due to a disease or a natural disaster.
The seeds collected from 10 pine trees in Uirimji, which were a couple of hundreds year old, were germinated and grown into 30 to 50 cm high seedlings.
The beautiful and majestic pine trees in Uirimji are subject to strict management and protection from the city of Jecheon.
This is because Jerim woods, consisting of pines and willows, was designated as the Scenic Spot No. 20 along with Uirimji Temple in 2006, and has since then become a national cultural asset.
Initially, 183 pine trees were designated for management, but 7 of them have died with diseases.
"Uirimji pine trees receive special treatment, including entrusting them to a person who is qualified to repair cultural properties in the plant field,” an official from Jecheon city said. “This succession tree cultivation project is aimed to preserve the excellent traits of the Uirimji pine tree forever.”
