SEOUL, Sep. 10 (Yonhap) -- Naver Webtoon has ranked 1st place for sales and downloads on French Google Play cartoons, according to the webtoon corporation’s cited research from App Annie, an app research company, Friday.

Naver Webtoon has buckled down for their expansion to the European market launching a French service in December 2019. Later they changed it into a subscription service in November 2020.

The service has recorded 12th place on French Apple Store entertainments. Tappytoon of Contents First, which Never Webtoon has invested on, ranked 2nd place on French Google Play cartoons.

“We are rapidly growing through “CANVAS system” a contest to invent local contents and to train amateur authors and through strategies of translating Korean webtoons which have been proved to be successful,” said Naver Webtoon.

“True Beauty,” a romance webtoon written by cartoonist Yaongi and gained popularity in Korea, has gathered 620,000 subscribers. “The Remarried Empress” written by cartoonist Alphatart has attracted 340,000 readers.

Naver Webtoon has been holding a French webtoon contest with a prize of 77,000 euro (about 100 million won) from July.

“France is a significant market in constructing a global webtoon ecosystem as it is the second largest comics market after Germany. We are planning to actively set out to expand our market to Europe including France by presenting competitive contents through thorough localization strategies,” said Kim Sol, leader of Naver Webtoon’s French service.
