National monuments, three couples of storks to find new homes

Cultural Heritage Administration and Yesan county announced on Wednesday that they wil sign business agreement with Gimhae city, Cheongju city, and Seosan city at Yesan Stork park on Friday and send three couples of storks raised in Yesan county to each releasing sites.

Stork couples will be released into nature with their young after passing spawning period(Feb.to May) of laying eggs and brooding period (March to July) of raising youngs.

Each cities will have artificial nest near the releasing area to help natural breeding.

Storks usually live in North-eastern China and Korean peninsula and appear in various tales and legends.

They were resident birds commonly seen in Korea until 1950, but the numbers drastically decreased due to poaching and destruction of natural environment.After a last pair was found in Eumseong county, storks disappeared without a trace.

Cultural Heritage Administration and researcher of storks at Korea National University of Education since then have been working on proliferation and restoration of storks by importing them from countries such as Russia, Germany, and Japan.

With such effort, more than hundred storks currently live in Korea. 11 couples of storks succeeded in natural breeding in the wild this year.

Official from Culutral Heritage Administration said, "We will continue to do our best to help natural monuments co-exist and proliferate in daily lives."
