“Narrow-minded, petulant prince.” This is the introduction of Crown prince Go Won from tvN weekend drama “Alchemy of Souls.”

The prince who holds power is narrow-minded and even mean-spirited, so being the “annoying” character seems obvious. But somehow his cuteness keeps turning on as the story unfolds. Go Won is easily startled by a small sound when he tires to be serious with solemn expression, and is embarrassed by giving orders that do not fit the situation with a cold tone.

Actor Shin Seung-ho, who played an attractive character at season 1 of “Alchemy of Souls,” met with Yonhap News agency on Aug. 26 at one cafe in Seoul.

The actor, filming two drives season 2 of “Alchemy of Souls” and “Weak Here” simultaneously, seemed tired. “Alchemy of Souls” filmed season 1 and season 2 separately since the planing. Season 1 ended on Aug. 28.

Shin Seung-ho said he hoped Go won to be mean, but hard-to-hate character.

He said, “Although he may look like villian at first, as the story unfolds, he shows humane and postive side,” adding, “It is ture that he is narrow-minded and greedy, but at some point, he helps those around him, showing his humane side. I thought that was attractive.”

He continued, “Go won did not overuse his power although he could have as the prince,” adding, “He is a cute character who sometimes looks stupid, gets easily frightened, and accepts that some are better than him even if he does not want to.”

He said he focused on relaxing when acting Go won. It was a homework to be less serious, since he gives off reserved vibe with the height of 187 cm and large body frame.

“I know my appearance is pretty serious as an actor. That is my pro and con. But Go won I though was different from those dignified and ambitious princes. That is why I tried to be less serious. I am very bubbly, believe it or not.”

“Alchemy of Souls” is a complex genre of fantasy history, romance, action, and comedy. But the actor was into comedy acting.

The actor chose bromance between Go won and Jang Uk (Lee Jae-wook) who are attracted to each other as the best scene.

Shin Seung-ho said, “I began acting acting at a late age, but comedy was the reason I could get closer to acting,” adding, “There was no character like Go won who was free and ridiculous. I satisfied my thirst for comedy acting through Go won.”

He also said, “I wanted to make the atmosphere of drama more bright and more fun when Go Won appears,” adding, “I did ad-libs in every scene after the writer said they were funny.”

Go Won said it was an ad-lib when he said, “If it is stained with ink, why try to erase it. Just throw it away” to the question “How to erase stained ink on shirt” Seo Yul (Hwang Min-hyun) and Park Dang goo were solving.

Shin Seung-ho was a soccer player from 4th grade to until sophomore in university. He quit after putting all of his passion to soccer for 11 years. He said, “Living as soccer player was no longer happy.”

He began to learn modeling, which he was offered multiple times in the past, after quitting soccer and feeling lost. He was on the Seoul Fashion week stage in that summer and was selected as SBS super model that winter.

“I felt a great sense of loss when I achieved everything I could as a fashion model in just a year. I did not know what to do after my career as model was so easily achieved while my long dream as soccer player did not come true. Then model Park Dool Sun registered acting academy for me.”

I was pushed to go to acting academy, but when I first acted among other students, he thought, “This is kind of fun.”

He said, “I thought acting was not for me because being actor meant being celebrity. But acting itself was so fun,” adding, “After learning avidly, I dreamed of being an actor, and here I am today.”

He gave an impression to the public in the JTBC drama “At Eighteen” (2019), where he played the role of Ma Hwi-young, a perpetrator of school violence, and in the Netflix series “D.P” (2021), playing the role of Hwang Jang-soo, a devilish sergeant who bullies his successors. He was praised for playing a villain with a creepy and vicious acting well unlike a rookie.

Shin Seung-ho said, “Although I am thankful for the compliments, I don’t think I am good at acting yet,” adding, “I am just at a level where I can express what I have. I think I can express them well because I have had various experiences and began acting at a late age.”

“I never regretted about quitting soccer. I was satisfied, and I am more happy now acting. One day, I may not love acting. That is why I try my best now. I want to be an actor who people are curious about, who people look for.”
