SEOUL, Sep. 02 (Yonhap) -- “Truths are uncomfortable sometimes, but they have strength. I think that the reason the production received good comments is that it has truth in it.”
Actor Jung Hae-in who played the lead role Ahn Joon-ho (33) for Netflix original series “D.P.,” shared his thoughts about the drama’s popularity through an online interview on Sep. 1.
The drama highlights the dark sides of the military and within our society through the narrations of D.P., an army unit that captures deserters. It has gained immense popularity in less than a week since release and has secured 1st place on Netflix in South Korea.
“The series mainly features the military, but it can be our story as well. Like the last episode’s topic ‘bystanders,’ it gives us the message that we may have been bystanders in a sense, as well. The story makes us look back on ourselves,” said the actor.
Jung, who rose to stardom with drama “Something in the Rain” (2018), is positively rated for widening his acting spectrum through “D.P.” depicting the character’s complicated and hard mind.
“I was afraid whether I could do well as it was a different genre (from the previous),” said Jung.
“I thought that the character Ahn Joon-ho shouldn’t stand out in the work as it is not story of me and Han Ho-yul but of the deserters. So, I wondered a lot about how to well portray the character but at the same time suppress expressing emotions as much as possible. Especially, unlike the original webtoon, Joon-ho appears in the series as a private. His position limits his words and behaviors, so I played the role more focused on making reactions than actions.”
He also changed his appearance by cutting hair and giving make-up.
“It wasn’t a hard choice. Real soldiers don’t wear make-up and I wanted to play my role as realistically as I can,” said the actor.
“As judgement about my acting are the watchers’ and the producers’ part, I just want to say to myself that I am happy for having safely finished the film without any injuries,” said Jung about the production.
“Although I played for the series, I was totally immersed to it as I was watching thanks to the music, editing and the brilliant acting of the other actors,” said the satisfied star actor.
The actor was also asked to share his feelings of having taken part in the series featuring military life.
“Actually, people say that re-joining the army is last thing one would dream of. I felt I was back in my army days filming the drama. I used my experiences the most when portraying Joon-ho in the military barrack and quarter. I remember that I felt very nervous being alert in every sense when I was a private myself. I kept looking back on that memory.”
“In the poster, Joon-ho looks back not saluting unlike everybody else. I think it shows his character in an extent. He would have felt disgust over the military trying to cover up the incidents and accidents as if nothing had happened,” explained the actor about the last scene in which Ahn Joon-ho walks alone to the opposite direction from the soldiers marching in order.
Also, Jung expressed his regret over the real incidents which became the drama’s motive and revealed his opinion about the military culture.
“As our production is a fiction based on a real incident, I felt sad while filming. I can see that the military culture is gradually improving but that doesn’t mean that their current environment has no problem at all. It has become better. but it has to be more better and improved. I wish for the youngsters to safely return from the army unharmed both physically and mentally.”
Jung also expressed his anticipations for sequels as well.
“I am waiting for the script for season 2. The production shows a D-day and the work has to go on until D-1. It would be great to see the returning home of private first class in season 2, corporal in season 3 and sergeant in season 4,” said the actor with a laugh.
