SEOUL, Apr. 5 (Yonhap) -- Girl group WJSN member and actress Kim Ji-yeon, showed off her strong acting skills once again with “Twenty Five-Twenty One.”

Ahead of the last episode of “Twenty Five-Twenty One,” Kim said in a virtual interview on March 31, “I liked Yu-rim’s strong character and kindness.”

“Twenty Five-Twenty One,” portrays the romance between Kim Tae-ri and Nam Joo-hyuk and also captures the stories of the youth in the 1990s with a warm and pleasant stance.

Kim Ji-yeon's role is fencing gold medalist Ko Yu-rim, who initially is a rival of Na Hee-do (Kim Tae-ri), but becomes a best friend in the second half of the series.

Kim said, "I liked Yu-rim in the script so much that I thought I would express only as much as the script," adding, "I focused on the part that Yu-rim was different in front of her family, in front of Hee-do, and front of her (boyfriend) Ji-woong."

Yu-rim was a character who said harsh words to Hee-do, turned into a gentle good daughter in front of her family, and was a girlfriend who smiled brightly in front of her boyfriend.

"When she was with her family, I wanted Yu-rim to be a really sweet daughter, and when she was with Ji-woong, I wanted to show the emotions of a young high school student. I tried to express Yu-rim in the way she acted to Hee-do so that she could hide her fears.”

Kim, who has few memories of her friends due to her trainee years, also said she envied the friendship between Yi-jin (Nam Joo-hyuk), Ji-woong (Choi Hyun-wook), and Seung-wan (Lee Joo-myung) as well as the relationship between Hee-do and Yu-rim in the drama.

"I had no one like Yu-rim and Hee-do that hated each other but embraced everything," she said. "For Yu-rim, He-edo is a person she can rely on and also a good competitor.”

Kim added, "I liked how the process of immature characters, not perfect characters, going through their future was warm," adding, "I think I've built new memories of my school days."

Hee-do’s role, played by the veteran actor Kim Tae-ri could have been burdensome, but Kim said she was able to act comfortably because she cried and laughed together during fencing training even before the shoot.

Kim said, "I practiced while watching the national Olympic Games, but I couldn't keep up with the speed no matter what," and added, "I'm grateful to the coach because I think it came out better on the show than my skills."

Kim also mentioned that she was sad Yu-rim couldn’t beat Hee-do with her fencing skills.

"Yu-rim mentions how fencing is a means to earn money so I think it's right for her to not beat Hee-do (who enjoys fencing). Yu-rim, playing fencing for her family was heartbreaking and inspiring but still, watching the last episode, I think she also had a happy ending in her life."

When asked if she seems to grow as an actor every time she works, Kim said, "I learned a lot," adding, "I still have little experience, so I want to try a lot of different things."

Kim started acting with "Hit the Top" in 2017 and received attention in "Girls' Generation 1979" in the same year, and with "Homemade Love Story" (2020), the actor won the Best New Actress award at KBS Drama Awards.

Kim said, "If I learn singing and choreography on stage and show perfect performance, acting contains my thoughts and improvises," adding, "I don't put my goal far away, but now I'm focusing on what I want to do right away or what I'm given."
