Descendants of Korean War veterans from Ethiopia to showcase 'Peace Coffee' at 'Hwacheon Sancheon Ice Festival'

SEOUL December 29 (Yonhap) -- Hwacheon district located within Gangwon Province will be showcasing a café and an exhibition related to Ethiopia at the scene of “Hwacheon Sancheon Ice Festival” starting on January 7, addressed district government on Thursday.

Exhibition which will take place within the festival, will feature two of the descendants of Korean War veteran and two of the students who are continuing on with their education through masters degree with the scholarship they acquired from Hwacheon.

Moreover, the café which will also be placed within the festival will provide visitors with authentic Ethiopian coffee beans, where they will provide freshly made traditional coffee and hand drip coffee at the scene.

Ethiopia is known for exporting coffees throughout the world, therefore it has a nickname of “Home of Coffee.”

Throughout the exhibition, the successful cases of scholarship provided by Hwacheon and the process of awarding the scholarship to Ethiopian students.

Since 2009, Hwacheon district located with Gangwon Province are working very hard to support the descendants of those who participated and helped out during the Korean war to overcome the poverty and have hope and to dream of better future.

Out of 399 of the students who have received the scholarship in the past, over 250 of the students are maintaining their education due to the scholarship provided by the Hwacheon district.

Moreover, 13 of the students have managed to enroll in the School of Medicine located within the capital of Ethiopia, and out of those 13 students 10 of them have managed to become doctors.

Mayor of the district, Choi Moon-soon, addressed “I hope a lot of you guys will visit the scene and taste the ‘Peace Coffee’ they offer,” adding “We will continue on with our Scholarship in 2023 as well in order for them to become a great person in the future who will bring development to the country.”
