'Jikji, flame of civilization,' Cheongju Jikji Festival to be held after 4 years

SEOUL, Apr. 16 (Yonhap) -- The "Jikji Festival" will be held in Cheongju from September 2nd till the 7th to inform the historical value of Jikjisimcheyojeol (shortly referred to Jikji), the first ever metal movable type.

According to Cheongju city on the 16th, the festival will be held in the Cheongju Jikji Special Culture Zone to commemorate Jikji getting inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme in the September of 2001. It was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

At this year's festival with the theme, "Jikji, the flame of civilization," academic events including "Scientific Analysis Results of Jikji," "Protection and Utilization of Metal Type Printing" and exhibitions related to the world's printing culture will be held online and offline.

Additionally, various performances and experience programs including the metal casting experience will be open to the public.

Institutions and organizations that have contributed to the preservation of the Memory of the World Programme will be selected and awarded for the UNESCO/Jikji Memory of the World Prize. In 2020, Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in Cambodia, a museum chronicling the Cambodian genocide was awarded with the prestigious UNESCO/Jikji Memory of the World Prize.

An official from the Jikji Festival said, "This year's festival will be made with the participation of the citizens with local artists and organizations developing contents for the events while also developing a network called 'Metal and Typewriters'."
