SEOUL, Oct. 31 (Yonhap) -- South Korean actress Kim Hyun-joo showcased her growing action skills in the second season of "Hellbound," released on Thursday. In the SF series, she delivers high-energy scenes that included intense car chases and one-on-one combat.
In an interview on the 30th, Kim reflected on her journey with action roles: “When I first filmed Hellbound, I had no experience in action scenes. But as I took on more of them, I began to improve.”
Starting her career in the late 1990s as a teen romance star, Kim was known for her girl-next-door image. However, her roles in "Hellbound Season 1 (2021)," "JUNG_E (2023)," and now "Hellbound Season 2" showcase her versatility as an actor, marking her transition into action roles.
Kim’s role as Min Hye-jin is pivotal as she challenges societal and religious powers in the dystopian world of Hellbound, where mysterious entities predict people’s deaths and supernatural creatures execute them in brutal displays. Hye-jin, standing against extremist cults and violent gangs, embodies the show’s theme of resilience and human dignity. Reflecting on her character, Kim said, "Hye-jin stands alone in upholding humanity, different from those who exploit others for their beliefs.”
While Season 2 concludes with intriguing twists, it has left fans speculating about a possible Season 3. Kim, however, suggested her character may not return. “If there’s a Season 3, it may follow a new storyline in a different time frame,” she noted.
Although Hellbound marked her first experience with a serialized role, Kim expressed her joy and gratitude at being part of the series' continued success.
When asked about her future with action roles, she remained enthusiastic, saying, “I would love to do more action roles if given the chance, though ideally in a completely different genre. Action scenes demand extensive preparation, but they’re rewarding and exciting.”
