SEOUL, August 9 (Yonhap) – Should we try trio togehter?”

In 2006, CNSM, Paris, France. After class in Paris, where concerts of world-class musicians never ceased, three Korean students who have been listening to senior musicians formed a trio after participating in a chamber music class together.

Dreaming of a bright future for music, the name for the ensemble is “Jade,” which means jewel.

“Trio Jade,” composed of cello Lee Jeong-ran, violinist Park Ji-yoon, and pianist Kim Hyo-joo, who strengthened their team work even when performing in Seoul and Paris independently, marked their 17th debut anniversary.

A long time passed, and only Park Ji-yoon remained in Paris and became the first Asian to be a concertmaster at the prestigious French Philharmonic. The eldest sister, Lee Jeong-ran (cello), worked as a soloist for 7 years as an deputy chief for Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, and Kim Hyo-joo (piano) moved to Germany to study at the Hannover National University of Music and has been performing in S.Korea since 2015.

Trio Jade is a talented group who was the first Korean team to win third place without first place in the piano trio section of the Schubert International Chamber Music Competition in 2015 and who took third place at the Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition in the same year.

Yonhap News agency met with “Trio Jade,” who holds regular concert “Bohemian” at the IBK Chamber Hall of the Seoul Arts Center on August 20, at a cafe near Seoul Arts Center on August 7.

“Charm of piano trio? Well, each of us can show our full potential as a soloist, while we exude energy when we work in a trio. That’s the charm.” (Lee Jeong-ran)

Next to her, Park Jiyoon said, "I think we get more synergy when we use what we have learned and gained while working as a soloist or performing in other chamber music."

But they had to cancel Brahms' piano trio concert, which they ambitiously prepared , due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Brahms' Piano Trio No. 1 in B major, which they practiced at that time, became the last song for this concert instead.

The piece with the most elaborate preparation was Dvorak's Piano Trio No. 3 in F minor. This massive song is the first to be performed on the stage, so the amount of practice was the greatest.

“The reason we named the concert ‘Bohemian’ has a lot to do with this song. Dvorak was Czech to the bone and wrote songs with a bohemian sensibility. He received many influences from Brahms when he wrote this song. Try to listen to the song with the thought that sensibilities of Bohemian and German are mixed in here."

When asked if they had enough time to practice together, Park Jiyoon said, "I still come to Korea three or four times a year,” adding, "When I come, the three of us practice every day."

“Trio Jade,” who have been practicing chamber music for 17 years, said that they feel proud as seniors in that more and more people aspire to become chamber music specialists in addition to being a soloist, who receive a splendid spotlight.

“When I teach students these days, many say that ‘My dream is to make a good quartet.’ There are many times where people meet like-minded friends at a college of Music and form a chamber music team. " (Lee Jeong-ran)

Besides regular concerts, their calendars are full of other concert schedules as well. On August 16, “Ensemble Unisong” will perform Beethoven's Triple Concerto in C major at a concert to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the founding.

Prior to that, pianist Kim Hyo-joo will play a concerto in C minor for two pianos by “the teacher of Yun-chan Lim” Son Min-su and Bach at 'Bach Plus' held at the Lotte Concert Hall on August 10. Lim Yun-chan, the same agency as 'Trio Jade' (Mok Production), will also present Bach's Piano Concerto No. 5 in F minor on this day.

Cellist Lee Jeongran plans to meet the audience as a soloist with a recital titled 'From the Bohemian Forest' at the Seoul Arts Center on Sep. 23.

“We always talk about holding a commemorative concert when we reach seventies. It feels like a distant future, but time goes by quickly. Until then, I’m going to try to do the vast piano trio step by step. I also want to release an album."
