SEOUL, Sept. 30 (Yonhap) -- The second season of Netflix's Gyeongseong Creature, released on the 27th, has generated more skepticism than excitement among viewers.
Despite a hefty production budget of 70 billion won, the first season's mixed reception left many expectations unmet, with critiques highlighting a lack of narrative depth and ambiguity in its genre.
In response, the creators opted for a significant re-edit during the final stages of post-production for Season 2. While the overall framework remains similar, the first three episodes provided to the media appear to address some of the shortcomings of the previous season. The pacing has improved, effectively blending romance, action, and creature features to enhance the overall entertainment value.
Set in Seoul in 2024, Season 2 follows Yoon Chae-ok (Han So-hee), an ageless entity who has endured the weight of time since 1945, as she encounters Jang Tae-sang and his doppelgänger, Jang Ho-jae (Park Seo-joon). Continuing her work as a finder of missing persons under the alias "Eunjaebi," Yoon Chae-ok is tasked with locating a missing son, leading her to a motel where she discovers a gruesome murder scene—one that leaves law enforcement baffled and categorizes it as a series of killings across Jongno-gu.
The story takes a turn when Yoon Chae-ok and Jang Ho-jae, both present at the murder site, team up to uncover the real culprit. Their romance feels more natural this season, with Jang Ho-jae's longstanding affection for Yoon Chae-ok becoming more compelling than the instant attraction shown by Jang Tae-sang.
This season also emphasizes the creature genre more prominently. There are more monsters, and their diversity is noteworthy. Unlike the nurturing creatures of the first season, this time the monsters are ruthless and relentless. Yoon Chae-ok's newfound superhuman abilities allow her to take on over a hundred elite agents known as Kuroku, providing an exhilarating sense of thrill as she battles these foes.
However, some moments stretch plausibility, such as Jang Ho-jae's miraculous escape from a car accident while chasing after Yoon Chae-ok, or the swift defeat of a Kuroku agent by a mere car hit from a supporting character.
Director Jung Dong-yoon expressed during the press conference that he aimed to tell a story that transcends time through the lens of creatures. He emphasized the enduring presence of individuals who exploit personal gain and commit horrific acts, despite the advancements of the past 79 years.
The narrative hints at a connection between the characters and the historical backdrop of the Ongseong Hospital, where biological experiments were conducted during Japanese rule, though specific details remain shrouded in mystery until the mid-season. Viewers are left eager to uncover how the story ties these elements together, including the reasons behind the creation of Kuroku.
Gyeongseong Creature Season 2 consists of a total of seven episodes, with all episodes made available for streaming on the release date.
