SEOUL, Apr. 20 (Yonhap) -- South Korean star director Ryoo Seung-wan’s star-dubbed action crime film “Smugglers” is set to hit local theaters on July 26, distributor NEW confirmed Thursday.
Set in the 1970s in a small, peaceful village by the sea, this upcoming adventure film will revolve around smugglers who make a living by scooping up smuggled goods thrown into the sea facing a once-in-a-lifetime incident.
Helmed by director Ryoo, the film raised up the hype of moviegoers by casting a slew of veteran actors, including Kim Hye-soo, Yum Jung-ah, Zo In-sung, and Park Jung-min. Director Ryoo has credits for producing multiple smash-hit films including “Escape from Mogadishu” and “Veteran.” In particular, his 2015 action-crime film “Veteran” welcomed more than 10 million viewers to theaters.
“Smugglers” will mark Ryoo’s first film in two years since “Escape from Mogadishu,” by which he teamed up with Zo In-sung. This action-drama film raked in 3.61 million admissions despite the then-ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which had a devastating impact on the film industry as well.
