SEOUL, May 8 (Yonhap) -- The culture ministry and the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) said Friday they will distribute 2.25 million discount coupons for movie tickets starting next week as part of efforts to support the local film industry and boost cultural consumption.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and KOFIC said the 6,000-won (US$4.30) movie discount coupons will become available at 10 a.m. on May 13.

Last month, the ministry secured 27.1 billion won in a supplementary budget to provide a total of 4.5 million movie discount coupons. The remaining 2.25 million coupons are scheduled to be distributed in July.

The coupons can be used through the websites and mobile applications of major multiplex chains, including CGV, Lotte Cinema, Megabox and Cine Q. Two coupons per person will be automatically issued to registered online members through each theater chain's coupon box.

Unused coupons will automatically expire once each theater chain exhausts its allocated quantity.

At independent and arthouse theaters, small local cinemas and senior cinemas, the coupons can only be used through the theaters' websites. At theaters unable to provide online coupons due to system limitations, the coupons will be distributed onsite on a first-come, first-served basis.

A list of participating theaters is available on the KOFIC website.

The coupons can also be combined with other discount programs. Moviegoers using the coupons at CGV, Lotte Cinema and Megabox on the second and last Wednesday of each month can stack them with the "Culture Day" promotion, which offers movie tickets at 10,000 won, lowering the final ticket price to 4,000 won.

The coupons can also be combined with discounts for people with disabilities, senior citizens, youths and early morning screenings. However, if the discounted ticket price falls below 1,000 won, the final ticket price will be adjusted to 1,000 won.

The coupons cannot be used together with mobile carrier membership discounts.

The ministry said it plans to operate a dedicated hotline at 02-2135-2618 to provide detailed guidance on ticket reservations.
