SEOUL, May 6 (Yonhap) – SBS’ new Monday and Tuesday drama “Woori the Virgin,” which is more ridiculous and humorous beyond the romantic comedy drama, will be first aired on May 9 at 10 p.m.
The female lead Im Soo-hyang introduced the drama at an online press conference of “Woori the Virgin” on May 4, “When I first read the script, I wondered if this would be possible in Korea,” adding, “The drama shows an ‘ending hell’ while portraying the process of the main character making an unexpected decision and overcoming the situation, so you will likely to look forward to the next episode.”
“Woori the Virgin” depicts the story of Oh Woo-ri(Im Soo-hyang), who strictly maintains her chastity before marriage, having a baby of a man due to an accident while receiving her medical checkup.
It is a Korean remake of the American rom-com “Jane the Virgin,” which was broadcasted over five seasons on CWTV since 2014. “Jane the Virgin” is known for its wildly playful and chaotic development of the story, including artificial insemination, drug, murder, and love affair, which goes beyond any S. Korean dramatic TV series
The director Jeong Jeong-hwa explained, “’Jane the Virgin’ is an American remake of ‘telenovela’ genre in South America, and it is incomparably more provocative than S. Korean crazy dramas,” adding, “There is also a number of fans in Korea and it has received reviews that no other provocative drama can stack up against it.”
She added, “I’ve tried to find a way to Koreanize the drama to make viewers enjoy it,” adding, “S. Korean dramas also have the charm of being hot and unexpected regarding the story development.”
Director Jeong said that she was most worried about producing a relatable drama while making a remake of a foreign work.
She said, “There were many parts where they don’t go along with Korean emotions,” adding, “I changed the story by focusing more on the process of the characters overcoming the difficulties and the fact that family is the source of their strength, rather than the provocative factors of the drama.”
Jeong also mentioned that she had burdens of dealing with such a sensitive subject matter of chastity before marriage.
She said, “I can’t just tell the viewers to watch the drama without thinking since the subject itself is controversial,” adding, “There is also a line from the drama saying that it is right to say relationship after marriage rather than chastity before marriage, so I hope people enjoy the drama while talking about the problem together.”
Im said, “Woo-ri is a character who became pregnant with the child of Raphael, played by Sung Hoon,” adding, “She is involved with various incidents, but we tried to depict the process pleasantly since she is a character who independently makes decisions on her own.
