SEOUL, October 19 (Yonhap) -- The living legend of the Korean pop music industry. Cho Yong-pil's masterpieces are going to be released as a musical.
"We are planning to make a jukebox musical (musical made out of popular music) out of Cho Yong-pil's music," announced YPC, Cho Yong-pil's agency and the musical production company Insight Entertainment.
Prior to the production of the musical, a script writing competition based on Cho Yong-pil's hit songs will be open to everyone who is willing to participate. The total reward will be around 150 million won.
An official from Insight Entertainment explained, "Cho Yong-pil always wanted to make his music to a musical, and the musical industry always wanted to produce Cho Yong-pil's music into a musical," and added, "There were requests from people that Korea needed to produce musicals such as "Mama Mia," produced with the pop group ABBA."
The production company came up with a goal of producing a high-end jukebox musical that would spread not only in Korea but internationally using Cho Yong-pil's music.
The script writing competition will start on October 1 and run until February 28, and anyone can apply online through the Insight Entertainment official website.
There is no template or format to be followed, and the musical script or the story will just have to be produced with the hit songs of Cho Yong-pil for around 140 minutes. All of Cho Yong-pil's songs can be used, and the set list for the story should also be submitted.
Experts in the fields of music and culture will be the judges to select three winners. The final winner will get a reward of 100 million and will get the chance to join the production of the musical, which is planned to be performed in 2025.
