SEOUL, Sept. 30 (Yonhap) -- South Korean beauty tech giant Cosmax said Wednesday it has developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based model to predict the risk of alopecia areata and completed a patent application for the technology.

Cosmax trained the AI model on about 22 million records from national health screening big data in South Korea and Japan. The model predicts an individual's risk of alopecia areata without directly collecting biological samples.

The model analyzes 33 key variables, including physiological and medical indicators such as blood pressure and liver function, as well as demographic and socioeconomic indicators. The approach is based on the premise that hair loss can be influenced by a combination of environmental and psychosocial factors.

Cosmax has piloted the algorithm on its personalized beauty platform, "BYNIQ."

If a questionnaire-based assessment predicts a low risk of alopecia areata, the platform recommends products containing "SOYACT," a functional ingredient not officially designated for alleviating hair loss. If the predicted risk is high, it recommends solutions containing "GANOXYL."

Cosmax is also expanding its hair-care research.

Recently, the company analyzed scalp-targeted lipidomes from 387 East Asian, European and African subjects, classifying scalp types into three categories and identifying race-specific lipid structures and factors that contribute to scalp vulnerability.

Based on the findings, Cosmax plans to develop personalized biomarker panels for different racial groups and introduce products optimized for the biological characteristics of different scalps.

In collaboration with Seoul National University, the company also developed a new material called "Corelink-S," which restores cystine bonds in hair and improves the tensile strength of damaged hair by more than 120 percent.

The material was selected as a finalist in the hair-care formulation category of the Cosmopack Awards at this year's Cosmoprof Bologna, a global beauty trade show.

Cosmax's hair-care sales rose about 65 percent in the first half of this year from the same period last year. The company has filed 37 hair-care-related patent applications over the past three years.

"Cosmax is expanding the horizons of hair-care research through AI- and big data-based convergence technologies and globally personalized research," a Cosmax official said. "Based on advanced technologies and empirical data secured through patents and global collaborations, we will introduce personalized solutions tailored to different racial and hair types and lead the shift toward hyperpersonalization in the hair-care sector."
