SEOUL, May 13 (Yonhap) — South Korean girl group aespa has been chosen as one of the Next Generation Leaders by the U.S. news magazine TIME, according to the agency SM Entertainment, Friday.

"Next Generation Leaders" is a list that TIME selects and announces trendsetters and pioneers every year. 


TIME commented, “aespa is an experiment, but it may also be the inevitable next step for the music industry: a fresh way to bridge the virtual and the real.”

aespa has recorded three consecutive hits from its debut song "Black Mamba" to "Next Level" and "Savage" with the unique concept of "metaverse (virtual world) girl group."

aespa said, "The metaverse worldview is a new concept in SM, so we were worried at first," and added, "However our fans liked it by making 'Meme' (Internet popular content) with this worldview."


"Our goal is to universalize the concept of metaverse and make it easier for fans and the public to accept the concept of metaverse," the group added. "It can be a journey for fans to enjoy videos and contents containing our worldview beyond just enjoying our songs."
