SEOUL, Aug. 6 (Yonhap) -- The 28th Jeongdongjin Independent Film Festival, held under the slogan "Stars Above, Films by the Sea," will take place from Aug. 7 to 10 at the playground of Jeongdong Elementary School in Gangneung's Gangdong-myeon and at Sinyoung Cinema in Gangneung, Gangwon Province.

The festival has become one of the region's signature cultural events, bringing audiences and independent filmmakers together by making the most of Jeongdongjin's distinctive setting of the sea, a railway station and outdoor screenings.

A total of 27 South Korean independent feature and short films will be screened across the two venues. Screenings at Jeongdong Elementary School will run from Aug. 7 to 9, while Sinyoung Cinema will host screenings from Aug. 8 to 10.

The festival has expanded both its screening period and venues in response to a sharp rise in attendance in recent years and to improve accessibility for Gangneung residents.

To ensure a safer viewing environment, organizers have changed the entrance layout and will limit attendance through wristband distribution.

Festivalgoers may set up mosquito nets around the outdoor screening area, use back-supported chairs without elevated platforms and bring outside food. Pets are also welcome to accompany their owners during screenings.

All screenings are free of charge.

"Audience members will be able to experience both the romance of outdoor screenings and the immersive atmosphere of indoor cinema," a festival official said. "We hope visitors enjoy the unique charm of independent films in Gangneung this summer."
