SEOUL, July 1 (Yonhap) -- Korea House, a traditional cultural complex in central Seoul, will undergo a full-scale renovation for the first time in 45 years and is scheduled to reopen on March 3 next year, the Korea Heritage Agency said Tuesday.

The comprehensive remodeling project, set to run through March 2, 2026, will include refurbishing the main hanok (traditional Korean house), the annex building, and landscaping the outdoor garden. The renovation aims to preserve the traditional beauty of Korean architecture while improving visitor convenience with modern facilities.

During the construction period, services such as the on-site restaurant and traditional wedding ceremonies will be suspended.

However, the "Hansik Academy," a Korean cuisine education program jointly hosted by Korea House and renowned chefs, will continue to operate throughout the renovation. The program includes regional ingredient exploration and the development of new dishes.

“This project goes beyond simple facility upgrades — it is about envisioning the future of Korea House and the direction of Korean cuisine,” said Lee Gui-young, head of the Korea Heritage Agency. “We aim to present a more refined traditional food culture moving forward.”

Korea House first opened in 1957 as a state guesthouse under the Office of Public Information, then directly affiliated with the presidency. It was later reconstructed in the style of traditional Korean architecture and has since served as a venue where both locals and tourists can experience traditional cuisine and culture.

In the first half of this year alone, Korea House recorded approximately 2.58 billion won (about USD 1.9 million) in revenue.
