SEOUL, June 23 (Yonhap) -- Hollywood fantasy film "How to Train Your Dragon" has defended its box office crown for a third straight weekend, fending off new competition and maintaining its popularity.
According to the Korean Film Council’s box office data released on Monday, Dean DeBlois’s How to Train Your Dragon drew approximately 213,000 viewers from June 20 to 22, claiming 22.9% of the market share and securing the #1 spot at the weekend box office. Its cumulative audience has now surpassed 1.28 million.
In second place was Disney and Pixar’s animated feature Elio, which was viewed by 211,000 moviegoers (21.1% share). Despite a slow start after its June 18 release — even falling to 4th place during the weekdays — the film made a strong comeback over the weekend. On Saturday and Sunday (June 19–20), it narrowly surpassed How to Train Your Dragon in daily attendance.
Landing in third place was 28 Years Later, the third installment of the 28 Days Later series, arriving 18 years after the last film. It pulled in 176,000 viewers (16.9%) over the weekend. Although it briefly topped the charts upon its June 19 debut, mixed reactions caused its ranking to slip.
In fourth place was the Korean superhero film Hi-Five, directed by Kang Hyeong-cheol, which brought in 139,000 viewers (14.1%). Its total viewership has now reached 1.73 million.
Tom Cruise’s action blockbuster Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning came in fifth with 71,000 tickets sold (7.8%), while the occult film Shinmyeong — inspired by Kim Keon-hee, the wife of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, and produced by political YouTube channel Open Sympathy TV — ranked sixth with 62,000 viewers (6.4%).
