SEOUL, Dec. 27 (Yonhap) – It was found that 4 to 6 out of 10 Koreans do not regard chicken as a Korean food.

Korean Food Promotion Institution has reported on Dec. 27 that the following result was identified as a result of a survey targeting 1,500 Korean adults aged 19 to 69 from Oct. 18 to 21.

The survey team presented 30 most-loved foods of domestic consumers and asked respondents to indicate whether they consider each food as Korean.

As a result, 54.9% of respondents regarded Korean-style seasoned chicken as a Korean food while only 36.1% of respondents said fried chicken was a Korean food.

In other words, 63.9% and 45.1% of respondents each said fried chicken and Korean-style seasoned chicken is not a Korean food.

This perception contrasts with the results of a recent survey held by Korean Food Promotion Institution that “Korean-style chicken” is foreigners' favorite Korean food.

Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and Korean Food Promotion Institution surveyed 8,500 residents of 17 major foreign cities from August to September and chicken ranked No.1 as their favorite Korean menu.

Likewise, while chicken is the most popular Korean food among foreigners, many Koreans do not consider Korean-style seasoned or fried chicken as Korean.

In this survey, Kimchi has topped the response of “I think it is Korean food” with the rating of 99.7%.

The ranking was followed by Doenjang-jjigae(99.3%), Buchimgae(95.3%), Japchae(94.3%), Gimbap(90.8%), Samgyeopsal(77.9%), Hotteok(68.9%), Hodu-gwaja(67.0%), and Budae jjigae·fiskcake soup(63.7%).

The low rating responds were corn cheese(16.3%), curry rice(17.3%), Western style of pork cutlet(18.2%), Bulgogi pizza·Bulgogi burger(21.9%), garlic Baguette sandwich(22.1%), and Jajangmyeon(35.0%).

Chapaguri(Chapagetti+Neoguri), which was known worldwide through the movie ‘Parasite,’ was regarded as Korean food with the respond rate of 55.1%. The responds to Bingsu, Mandu, and instant noodles were also about 50%.

15.5% of respondents said “Kimchi” was the first word that comes to mind when it comes to Korean food, followed by "cooked rice (14.1%)," "Guk·Jjigae(12.4%),” and "healthy(13.1%).”

The survey team identified “As Kimchi, Doenjang-jjigae, and Namul were mostly mentioned, Koreans seem to consider these menus as Korean food.”
