SEOUL, Feb. 2 (Yonhap) - A-young (Jung Eun-chae) and Junho (Lee Dong-hwi) are an old couple. The two, who have been together since they were college students, are still together even when they are over 30.
However the stability of a relationship and the magnitude of love are not proportional to time. Junho, who failed the civil service exam for several year and A-young who gave up her dream and entered the real estate brokerage business to support Junho. The two are getting tired of each other.
Like the Korean title of the movie, the two intuitively feel that the relationship is heading toward the end even before they break up.
Unlike other romance films, the movie starts in earnest when the two break up. The argument between A-young and Junho is extremely trivial, so the breakup process comes more realistic.
A-young is embarrassed by Junho, who has no decent job even though he is well over 30s. She grumbles to Junho, who wears an extended T-shirt and a checkered shirt at his friends' meeting, saying, "You should dress up." She finds Junho unreliable to see him brag in front of her and not be angry in front of the police, saying, "It's okay."
Junho is displeased of A-young, who does not even touch the housework because she makes money. When he cooks ramen, he says, "I don't have any thoughts," and gets angry at A-young, who comes when he eats and eats all the ramen, saying, "Give me a bite." He feels disgusted for her to suspend the card transaction as soon as they fight.
Director Hyung Seul-woo added more to the short story he had conceived five to six years ago and made it into a feature film. In the process, the story of a man who went to return a tablet PC to his ex-lover expanded to the process of meeting again after each had a new lover.
Director Hyung said at a press conference held right after the premiere, "This movie focuses on separation," adding, "I wanted to approach it from a different perspective from other romance movies in which the process of loving, breaking up, and meeting again is arranged sequentially."
A-young and Junho meet new people not long after they broke up. The new lover has a characteristic that exactly contradicts the previous lover.
A-young meets Kyung-il (Kang Gil-woo), a man with both wealth and caring personality, and Junho begins a relationship with Anna (Jung Da-eun), a free-spirited and honest college student. But even that relationship doesn't last very long.
The movie expanded the audience's empathy by quietly following the story of a couple who broke up due to a small misunderstanding and conflict.
The main actors Lee Dong-hwi and Jung Eun-chae lead the play quite successfully. Lee Dong-hwi brings laughter with his unique humorous acting tone, and Jung Eun-chae plays an ordinary woman in her 30s, presenting an image that was not seen in her previous work. In particular, the fresh combination of the two adds a fresh charm.
Lee Dong-hwi said, "I wanted to express the emptiness or hollowness that comes when the stable relationship formed by A-young and Junho after a long relationship disappeared."
The movie will be released on Feb 8.
