SEOUL, Aug. 12 (Yonhap) -- Lee Su-hyun of sibling duo AKMU will release a remake of J-pop star Seiko Matsuda's signature song "Blue Coral Reef" on Aug. 18, her production company SH Gold Network said Wednesday.

Originally released by Matsuda in 1980, "Blue Coral Reef" became a major hit for its refreshing melody and lyrics capturing the excitement of young love. The song gained popularity among Korean music fans through unofficial channels even before J-pop was formally distributed in South Korea.

In June 2024, Hanni of girl group NewJeans performed "Blue Coral Reef" at a fan meeting at Tokyo Dome, drawing widespread attention in both South Korea and Japan.

"Lee Su-hyun's signature clear yet warm vocals will blend with the refreshing atmosphere of the original to create a different kind of appeal," the production company said. "By adding Lee Su-hyun's emotional interpretation to the original song's freshness and excitement of summer, a new version of 'Blue Coral Reef' has been born."

Lee Su-hyun's version is the third song in a J-pop remake project planned by singer and television personality Kangnam.

Earlier releases in the project included "Manshoku Uta," performed by Girls' Generation's Taeyeon, and "Cruel Angel's Thesis," reinterpreted by singer Hanroro. Both received favorable reviews.
