SEOUL, April 10 (Yonhap) --

The Korea Heritage Service said Friday it has completed repairs and refurbishment of interior wallpapers and windows at key buildings in the Yeongyeongdang complex of Changdeokgung Palace using traditional hanji paper.

The project was carried out with support from the National Credit Union Federation of Korea, which has partnered with the agency since 2020 under a “cultural heritage guardian” agreement to help fund preservation efforts and support interior restoration work using traditional hanji.

Accordingly, the agency replaced aged wallpapers and repaired window frames in the inner quarters, men’s quarters and Seonhyangjae at Yeongyeongdang starting in September last year.

The Changdeokgung Management Office is reviewing plans to open the interior of Seonhyangjae to the public through special guided tours in the second half of this year.

A Korea Heritage Service official said the agency will continue to expand cooperation and social contribution activities in the preservation and utilization of cultural heritage in partnership with participating companies.

Yeongyeongdang at Changdeokgung is known to have been built between 1827 and 1828 by Crown Prince Hyomyeong to host banquets for King Sunjo and Queen Sunwon.

The complex follows the layout of a traditional aristocratic residence, with building arrangements and spatial organization reflecting Confucian principles. It was designated as a treasure in 2012 in recognition of its value as an example of aristocratic architecture within a royal palace during the Joseon Dynasty.
