SEOUL, Apr. 6 (Yonhap) -- South Korean star director Jang Hang-joon’s brand-new basketball film “Rebound” has touched down in second place on the first day of its release.

This fresh basketball film scored second by gathering 32,000 moviegoers, which accounts for 22.5 percent of sales share, chasing after the Japanese animated blockbuster “Suzume” that raked in 43,000 admissions.

Loosely based on the true story of the 2012 National High School Basketball League, this sports film follows the story of the under-sized and under-skilled JungAng High School basketball team in Busan and its legendary story of defying the odds and naysayers by making its way through to the finals of the league.

Director Jang returned to the big screens in six years with “Rebound,” which is based on the script written by the mega-hit screenwriter Kim Eun-hee, who is also his wife, and Kwon Sung-hwi, who has credits for writing Netflix’s original crime series “Narco Saints.”

Meanwhile, the American film “Air,” which follows the history of shoe salesman Sonny Vaccaro and how he brought Nike’s Jordan series to the world, scored third place by accumulating more than 17,000 admissions (12.3%) on the day before its release on April 5. The movie raised up the hype of movie fans by featuring the all-time favorite duo of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

In the meantime, Bruce Willis’ action-packed flick “Mutant Escape,” which was exclusively released at Lotte Cinema, recorded in tenth place.
