SEOUL, June 15 (Yonhap) -- The National Folk Museum of Korea will hold events introducing traditional customs associated with Dano, which falls on June 19 this year, on upcoming Wednesday and Friday, the museum said Monday.

 

Theming "Suri Sul's Suritnal, Dano," the events will highlight seasonal traditions tied to the holiday.

 

Dano, observed on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar, has also been known by other names, including Jung-o, Cheonjungjeol and Suritnal.

 

Traditionally regarded as one of Korea's major holidays, it was believed to be the time of year when positive energy reached its peak, leading to customs aimed at warding off evil spirits and praying for good fortune.

Visitors to the museum's Ochondaeck courtyard at 10 a.m. on June 17 will be able to see a reenactment of the custom of washing one's hair with sweet flag water.

 

Sweet flag, a plant commonly found in Korea, was believed to help prevent hair from turning gray and drive away evil spirits when boiled with its roots and used to wash the hair.

 

On Dano itself, June 19, the museum will hand out traditional Dano fans, symbolizing wishes for a cool summer, and share surichwi rice cakes and cherry punch with visitors.

 

Performances of Haeju Seungmu, a traditional monk's dance, and mask dance handed down in the Haeju region will also be staged.
