SEOUL, July 21 (Yonhap) -- South Korean movie "Alienoid" started off the first round of South Korean Summer movies battle, between famous movie directors Choi Dong-hoon and Kim Han-min, both known to attract ten million viewers with their movies.
Often times in Korea, people refer to movies which attracts over 10 or more million viewers as “Cheonman Movies."
Director Choi Dong-hoon, achieved the record of having 2 "cheonman Movies" with over 10 million viewers in S. Korea, “The Thieves” which premiered in 2012, and “Assassination” which premiered in 2015.
Where as director Kim Han-min attracted over 17 million audiences setting a new record for the most amount of audiences within Korean movies with “The Admiral: Roaring Current” which premiered in 2014.
Part one of the “Alienoid” which premiered on Wednesday is a first movies by director Choi Dong-hoon in seven years and “Hansan: The Emergence of Dragon” which will premier in July 27 is a first movies by director Kim Han-min in 8 years.
Adding on, one of many reasons why the battle between two movies is drawing a lot of attention is because, both of the movies took more than 30 billion won to create.
◇ Battle of “Alienoid” and “Hansan”, both movies exceeded over 300 billion won in production, fancy cast members and amazing CG.
Both of the movies are known for its scale in production.
“Alienoid” which produced both part one and part two of the movie at the same time; exceeded over 33 billion won in production cost for only part one.
The break even point for the movie is fixed at 700 million audiences. Also the production period of the movie “Alienoid” set a new record for having the longest production period among Korean movies with a record of 387 days.
“Hansan: The Emergence of Dragon” also costed over 31.2 billion won, which is about 1.64 times more in production cost compare to is previous series “The Admiral: Roaring Current.”
The break even point for the movie “Hansan: The Emergence of Dragon” is set at 600 million audiences.
A lot of famous movie stars were casted for the movie “Alienoid” starting with Kim Te-ri, Ryu Jun-yeol, Kim Woo-bin, So Ji-sub, Yum Jung-ah and more participated in the movie.
Also actress Lee hanee will appear as a Cameo in “Alienoid” to greet the audience.
“Hansan: The Emergence of Dragon” will star Park Hae-il as Admiral Lee, Byun Yo-han, Ahn Seong-gi, Kim Sung-kyun and more of famous Korean actors and actresses.
Both of the productions, with grand amount of production fee will feature premium computer graphics to blow audiences mind
“Alienoid” will feature robots, spaceships, aliens, and aspects one can see in a SF genre of movies. Especially in a scene were gigantic spaceships are chasing after one another through the city skylines in Seoul South Korea will keep the audiences at the edge of their sits.
“Hansan: The Emergence of Dragon” is filled with total of 51 minutes of the battle scene created with realistic CGs.
The battle scene featured in the movie was filmed on a set built on top of one of S. Korea’s skating rink which is about 10,000㎡.
Scenes where Geobukseon (turtle ship) going head to head with Japanese warships firing its weapon and Hakikjin tactic on the endless sea will leave a long lasting image of the movie.
◇ “Alienoid” which tried out for something new VS “Hansan” which went with the classic.
Although both of the movies share a common factor of having a huge production size, both of the movies have different genre, and atmosphere therefore audiences are provided with wider selection of movies.
Director Choi Dong-hoon tried out a new genre outside of his comfort zone of caper movie with “Alienoid” where as “Hansan: The Emergence of Dragon” is created by director “Kim Han-min who has proved his ability to create amazing Korean historical action movies drawing a lot of attention to both of the movies.
Director Choi Dong-hoon’s previous movies such as “The Big Swindle” released in 2004, “Tazza” which premiered in 2006, “The Thieves”, “Assassination” and more are usually movies heavily focused on crimes, thorough planning period and characters executing the plan.
However, “Alienoid” unfolds as the ascetic’s who are in a search of a mythical sword from the Goryeo dynasty crosses paths with those chasing after aliens who escaped from the body of human.
It is considerably different from director Choi Dong Hoon’s previous work.
Since the movie “Alienoid’ shares a lot of similarities with “Jeon Woo-chi” which premiered in 2009 a lot of people consider both to be in an extension but with additional features such as SF and alien aspects.
Director Kim Han-min’s “The Admiral: Roaring Current”, “War of the Arrow” and more showed his ability to create Korean Historical Action movies.
“Hansan: The Emergence of Dragon”, about the battle of Hansan Island from 1592 lies on a same path with director Kim Han-min’s previous movies.
The movie, “Alienoid” added family drama, time slip, comedy, romance and more features on top of the idea of SF movie whereas, “Hansan : The Emergence of Dragon” stayed truthful to its original genre.
“Alienoid” includes director Choi Dong-hoon’s unique humor where as “Hansan: The Emergence of Dragon” kept it simple to the Admiral Lee.
The age group which both movies attract is very different as well. “Alienoid” an action movie with complex multiverse is expected to attract audiences in their 10s and 20s, whereas, “Hansan: The Emergence of Dragon” which is based on the true historical fact is expected to draw attention among middle age audiences and senior.
Yoon Sung-eun movie critic gave her thoughts on both of the movies by stating “Alienoid” is a South Korean SF blockbuster but because it includes a lot of experimental aspects reviews of the movie will be very controversial.” adding “Hansan features the exciting and mind blowing naval battle as we expected.”
