SEOUL, June 30 (Yonhap) -- Actress Park Eun-bin is playing a lawyer with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
ENA held a production presentation on June 29 and announced that the new Wednesday-Thursday drama "Extraordinary Attorney Woo "will be aired for the first time on the same day.
"Extraordinary Attorney Woo" tells the story of Woo Young-woo (Park Eun-bin), a lawyer who is extremely smart but has autism. Woo Young-woo is a new lawyer who graduated with top grades in the law school as she never forgets what she sees once, but was diagnosed with autism as a child.
Park Eun-bin confessed that it was difficult to play a character with a disability at first.
"When I first received the script, I had no idea how to act, or even if it was okay to act out this character," she said. "However, I thought that instead of acting I should make the audience feel the sincerity of Woo Young-woo and Park Eun-bin."
"I put my top priority on not imitating the person (with autism) embodied in the media," she continued. "I studied by looking at the script and the autism diagnostic criteria. However, rather than focusing on the symptoms, I tried to express the feelings of the character."
Park Eun-bin said that she learned a lot while playing Woo Young-woo.
"Even in a life full of inconveniences, Woo Young-woo moves forward bravely," she said, "I wanted to convey the world that Young-woo sees instead of looking at autism through the eyes of an observer."
Producer Yoo In-sik, in charge of directing, introduced the work as a human court drama and said that it was different from a court drama that conveys heavy revenge episodes.
"In court dramas, murder-like incidents usually appear and cause tension, but in our drama there are really only trivial incidents," Producer Yoo said. "Young-woo who takes on such cases solves these cases from a completely different perspective.”
He continued, "At first, it'll make people wonder whether Woo Young-woo could solve such cases, but later, it'll make them curious how Young-woo would uniquely solve the case."
Regarding the use of the word "extraordinary" in the title, PD Yoo said, "The reason Woo Young-woo looks extraordinary is because she does not take things that are familiar and normal for granted. She makes people think about the normal things once again by bothering to ask questions. She makes normal things look new."
Actor Kang Tae-oh plays Lee Joon-ho, an employee of the Songmoo team who helps Woo Young-woo, and Kang Ki-young plays Jung Myung-seok, Woo Young-woo's mentor.
"Jung Myung-seok is a character who's a senior lawyer, but remembers the spirit of when he first became a lawyer after meeting Woo Young-woo," Kang Ki-young said. "Although Woo Young-woo is a new lawyer, she teaches senior lawyers too. "While feeling a new kind of shock to Woo Young-woo, he begins to respect and admire her.”
"Lee Joon-ho's unconscious ideal type is a woman he can admire," said Kang Tae-oh, who has a love line with Park Eun-bin. "While feeling a new kind of shock, she begins to respect and admire him.”
