S.Korean musical ' Showman - A Dictator's fourth Body Double' receives grand prize from 'Korea Musical Award'

SEOUL January 17 (Yonhap) -- South Korean original musical “Showman – A Dictator’s Fourth Body Double” won the grand prize at the “7th Korea Musical Award.”

Musical “Showman – A Director’s Fourth Body Double” not only won the grand prize at the “Korea Musical Award” held at the LG Art Center Seoul on January 16, but it won in total of three various awards such as Best Male Musical Actor award and Best Script award throughout the ceremony.

Grand prize of the Korea Musical Award is awarded to the best original musical which premiered within that certain year. Some of the other various musicals which competed along with “Showman,” are “L’art Reste,” “Let Me Fly,” “Sylvia Live,” “Almond,” and “Viva La Vida, The Last Night Show.”

“Showman – A Director’s Fourth Body Double” which was produced by National Jeongdong Theater of Korea, premiered in March where the musical depicts the story of a protagonist girl Su-ah who encounters an old male who claims to have been the body double for the dictator.

Director Park So-young and writer Han Jung-seok, composer Lee Sun-young who are known for their production of “The Goddess,” and “Musical Red Book,” has come together to create the “Showman – A director’s Fourth Body Double.”

Production company OD Company’s musical “Death Note” received “Directing Award,” “Supporting Male Actor Award,” “Best Musical with over 400 admission,” and more in total of 4 various awards.

Musical “Death Note” which is based off of a Japanese comic “Death Note” depicts a intellectual mind game between the protagonist Light Yagami who withholds the power to write anyone down within the death note to kill, and detective L who is in search to catch Light.

Musical “Death Note” which opened its viewings to people in five years since it last premiered in South Korea 5 years ago in 2017, returned to the stage with various unique stage effects, successfully sold out every single shows, managing to extend the musical to run an extra month and a half from their initial run.

Moreover, South Korean musical “Let Me Fly” received “composer’s award” and “Best Musical with less than 400 admissions” while Producer award went to director Kim Mi-hye, Park Min-sun who produced “Mrs. Doubtfire.” Musical “Death Note” and “Mrs. Doubtfire” both won the “stage art award.”

“Female Lead actress award” was given to the chanter Lee Ja-ram from the musical Seopyeonje, and supporting actress award was given to Choi Jung-won a supporting actress of musical “Matilda.”

For the New Actor’s award, Shin Eun-chong of “Jesus Christ Superstar” and children actors Lim Ha-yoon, Jin Yeon-woo, Choi Eun-young, Ha Sin-bi from musical “Matilda” was awarded.

Singer and musical actress Yoon Bok-hee who has debuted in 1952 as a kid actress have participated in over 90 various productions throughout the years, was awarded with a contribution award throughout the ceremony.

“Korea Musical Awards” which started off in 2016 sums up the results and outcome of various musical which premieres within the and award them according based on their success.
