SEOUL, August 22 (Yonhap) -- “Hemp-steaming pit” re-creation event will be held in Jandari Village experience center at Yupyeong-ri, Jeongseon-gun for three days from Aug. 25-27.

Hemp-steaming pit is a way to make hemp, a material for Korean traditional hemp clothes.

Hemp was used for clothes such as jeogori, an unlined summer jacket, padded trousers, full-dress attire and living supplies like blanket, pillow, and cover.

The event will hold digging the Samgutteo, building trees and rock on Aug.25 and ignition ritual, building hemp, soil covering and etc on Aug. 26.

On the last day, Aug.27, events such as finding out hemp-steaming pit, stripping the samdae, and drying the hemp will be held.

Jeongseon was where the best quality hemp clothes were produced.

Making hemp clothes such as sowing, cultivating, hemp-steaming pit, weaving, and weaving during all 4 seasons were daily lives for people in Jeongseon.

Traditional hemp-steaming pit is only inherited in Yupyeong-ri.

An official from Jeongseon said, “Samgut, which was held in various places in Jeongseon, was an important traditional cultural festival and play culture that villagers tried to achieve harmony and overcome their hard life.”
