SEOUL, May 4 (Yonhap) -- The 1,000 year old Gangnueng Danoje Festival, inscribed on the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and National Intangible Cultural Heritage, will be held from May 30th to June 6th at the Namdaecheon Stream in Gangneung.

The Gangneung Danoje Festival was held online in 2020 and in 2021, it had a small-scale festival mainly based on the exhibition due to COVID-19.

This year's Gangneung Danoje Festival will have gut (rites performed by Korean shamans, involving offerings and sacrifices to gods, spirits, and ancestors), South Korea's largest nanjang (temporary market) and 50 other programs in 10 areas, including National cultural properties events, citizen participation events, and folk games.

This year, the Danojangsa Ssireum Competition hosted by the Korea Ssireum Association will also be held.

While the wrestling game of the vendors are expected, one will be able to see the Gangreung Danoje, Nongak (representative performing art of South Korea derived from communal rites and rustic entertainments) and Ssireum (Korean folk wrestling style and traditional nation sport of Korea) in one place.

Additionally, there will be unique performances that have inherited the traditions in a modern way, such as Dano-gut (shamanic ritual traditionally performed in the Yeongdong region during the dano day, in the hopes of peace and prosperity for the area) being the motif of Oh Mal-myeong, a new look at the Gwanno Mask Theater of Gangneung through Shi-ttakki Nolda, Do Chae-bi- Pungakjaengi, Bulsaechul and a fusion Gugak (Korean traditional music) group performing.

A variety of high-quality performances will be held, with Wang Ki-suk's sugungga (one of the five surviving stories of the Korean pansori storytelling tradition), Songpa Sandae Noli (Korean traditional mask play) and many more along with performances by art troupes representing Jeju, Jeonju, Bupyeong and Bucheon.

There will also be shintongdae-gil gilnori (June 4th), which is considered to be the essence of Korean gilnori ( street procession to the venue where a masked dance-drama is to be held, involving all the performers in the show) and will also have a soccer match between Jeil High School and Jungang High School (June 5th).

With the Gangneung Danoje Festival Short Video Competition hosted by the Gangneung Media Center, this festival will be able to be celebrated both offline and online.

The Dano Market, a flea market in Nanjang, will have a lot of things to see and buy. During the festival, a temporary parking lot is also provided at Gangenung Station to avoid parking problems and will also provide a shuttle bus.

An official from the Gangneung Danoje Festival said, "As it is a time where the citizens of Gangeung and the tourists are especially tired and exhausted due to COVID-19, we will do our best to keep Gangneung Danoje Festival, a festival of hope and prayer, to keep the tension and make the festival safe until the end."
