SEOUL, Oct. 5 (Yonhap) -- Model-actress Jung Ho-yeon has garnered the most social media followers out of all South Korean actresses due to the global hit Netflix series "Squid Game."
As of Tuesday, Jung's followers on Instagram reached 13.3 million, surpassing the number of followers for actress Lee Sung-kyung (12.9 million), who was previously No. 1, and Song Hye-kyo (12 million).
Before the release of "Squid Game," the 27-year-old model's followers totaled up to 400,000, however after the survival drama surged in popularity, Jung also rose to stardom.
Jung left a strong impression for both local and foreign audiences after playing a North Korean defector named Sae-byeok, who enters the game in order to win the prize money and help retrieve her family members.
The actress is also set to appear on NBC's "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" along with actor Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo and Wi Ha-joon. The talk show will be released on Oct. 6 (local time) after recording on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, "Squid Game" has maintained its No. 1 position for twelve days as the world's most popular Netflix TV show rankings offered by streaming analytics firm FlixPatrol. In second place is the American drama series "Maid, beating British comedy-drama "Sex Education."
