SEOUL January 11 (Yonhap) -- Widowed woman who cuts her ties with her husband side of the family and becomes a female doctor, and a servant of the king who strongly offer drinks melts king’s heart.
Recently, number of various Korean fusion historical drama are lining up to showcase in front of S.Korean audiences.
South Korean drama “The Forbidden Marriage” being broadcasted through MBC is more of a fantasy genre of drama instead of history.
From the very beginning, drama puts an emphasis on the fact that it takes place on a planet we are not familiar with.
With the idea of multiverse setting, “The Forbidden Marriage” lifts its need of realistic portrayal of the history and freely explore the imaginary world. Throughout the series, scammer Ye So-rang dances to a famous pop song “Hey Mama,” in front of the King, and one of the servants of the king tries to take off kings clothes.
Lines used throughout the series are more modernistic than the standard lines used throughout Korean historical drama series. By showcasing, “If you finish that glass, we are dating,” “Necklace given to the successful candidate” and more by protagonist So-rang attracts audience with more friendly aspects of the series.
“Poong The Joseon Psychiatrist Season 2” which premieres on Wednesday is a fusion historical series which puts psychiatrist in historical era.
Producer Park Won-kook addressed “I bet there were people who needed comfort back in Joseon Dynasty, therefore the production started off from the imagination that there should be a doctor who can comfort everyone.”
Yoo Se-poong acted by Kim Min-jae, works with female widowed doctor Seo Eun-woo acted by Kim Hyang-gi, helps out those who are in need and fights off bad guys throughout the series.
Season one of the series received a lot of positive reviews on a notion that it provided very heartwarming storyline of people within Joseon Dynasty overcoming their hardships and strive towards happiness.
Hopeless female character acted by Seo Eun-woo due to continuous taunting from her husband’s family for killing their son, bows to her husband’s photo during his rites and cut ties with her husband side of the family. By using the benefit of fusion historic series, drama provides audience with excitement.
Starting with “Dae Jang Geum,” “Lee San, Wind of the Palace,” “Dong Yi” and more from early 2000s, fusion historical dramas based on imaginary characters were popular, however nowadays, scenarios of the fusion dramas are focused on creating ideal type of history suitable for the audience.
Just like KBS drama “The King’s Affection” deals with life of Lee Hwi, acted by Park Eun-bin who gets left alone because she is a girl, and tvN’s drama “Under the Queen’s Umbrella” where Queen Im Hwa-ryeong acted by Kim Hye-soo who understands his son’s unique sexual identity, latest fusion historical drama shines light on minorities.
As show above, fusion historic drama provides a window of opportunity for audience to take time to really think about the reality.
Hwang Jin-mi pop culture critic addressed “Recent fusion historic dramas are technically very hard to identify as a historical drama because the only thing historic about these series are the clothes they appear in.” adding “Dramas that breaks the set of rules and ideology of the past will be successful than those which use historic background as a hook to draw people in.”
