SEOUL, August 6 (Yonhap) -- The Battle of Hansan, which took place at the coast of Hansando, Tongyeong, Gyeongnam in 1592, was a great naval battle that saved the country from a desperate crisis due to the Imjin War. The Joseon naval forces, which was led by admiral Yi Sun-sin, completely destroyed the elite fleet of the Japanese navy with genius tactics.
The city of Tongyeong announced on August 2 that it will be holding the Tongyeong Hansan Battle Festival to commemorate the Battle of Hansan, the pride of Tongyeong citizens, for the first time in three years since COVID-19.
The 61st Hansan Battle Festival, which will be held for 9 days from August 6 till 14, will be held in Tongyeong including Yi Sun-sin Park, Mujeon-daero, Juklim Bay and many more under the theme of "Tears of the General."
The festival contains the meaning and value of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, who must have shed tears while watching the devastated country and powerless people of the nation for 7 years during the Imjin war and Jeong Yu-jae-ran.
The scale of the festival, which came back after 3 years, has greatly increased.
The organizers also extended the festival period from 5 days to 9 days.
The main event site was moved from Gangguan Munhwa Madang to Samdo Sugunjeongjeyeong, and the venue was expanded, including the island areas such as Hansando, Saryangdo, and Yokjido so that many citizens could participate.
During the festival, one will be able to experience the thrill of victory in the Battle of Hansan anywhere in Tongyeong.
The opening ceremony will be held at 8 p.m. on August 6 with a special opening performance at the Samdo Sugun Tongjeyeong Naval Station along with fireworks.
On August 7, the Tongyeong Turtle Ship Concert awaits, while on August 9, the Samdo Sugun "Gunjeom" and the Joseon naval force martial arts play, "Bangbi" awaits.
On August 10, there will be a performance of Namhaean Byeolsingut, a national intangible cultural property, and on August 11, the youth musical "Wings of Crane," performed by its sister city, Gwacheon, will be held.
On August 12, the "Hansan Naval Battle Departure Ceremony," with the participation of Sanyang-eup residents, will be held in Dangposeong Fortress, Tongyeong, where the prelude to the victory in the Battle of Hansan took place.
The national intangible cultural asset, Seungjeonmu (Korean court dance to wish for and celebrate victory), Tongjaeyeong martial arts demonstration, and fireworks are also prepared.
The representative event of the festival, "Reenactment of the Battle of Hansan," will be held from 6 p.m. on the 13th in the sea of Hansando, the site of victory.
Starting with the performance of the R.O.K Navy Band, the Tongyeong Maritime Police Station, tourist boats, fishing boats, and about 100 ships, will reenact the scene of them repelling the Japanese forces.
On August 14, the last day of the festival, the performance of Tongyeong Ogwangdae (Mask Dance Drama of Tongyeong), a national intangible cultural asset, will be held on Mujeon-daero. It will then be followed by a procession of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, the commander of the Samdo Sugun Tonjesa, a performance of the R.O.K Navy band, and many more.
As this festival is held in conjunction with the release time of the movie "Hansan: Rising Dragon," which has recently surpassed 2 million cumulative audiences, it is expected that there will be an effect from that as well.
Director Kim Han-min, who directed "Hansan," is scheduled to give a lecture on the behind-the-scenes story of the movie at the History Promotion Center on the afternoon of August 13.
