SEOUL, Sept. 18 (Yonhap) -- Popular Japanese drama "Unnatural" will be remade into a South Korean drama of the same title starring Im Yoon-a, tvN said Friday.

 

The cable channel said it will premiere the mystery medical drama "Unnatural," starring Im, next year.

 

The series follows a forensic pathologist at U.D.I., a fictional institution specializing in autopsies and forensic investigations, as she uncovers the truth behind cases involving unnatural deaths. It is a remake of the Japanese drama of the same title that aired on TBS in 2018.

 

The original series, starring actress Satomi Ishihara, gained widespread popularity in Japan as well as South Korea for portraying the perspective of a female forensic pathologist amid a medical-drama genre dominated by male characters.

 

Im will play Song Do-eun, a forensic pathologist at U.D.I. Song appears cold on the outside but has a warmer heart than anyone else, and is determined to uncover the truth in every autopsy case.

 

The screenplay will be written by Min Ji-eun, who has repeatedly explored forensic medicine in the first and second seasons of "Partners for Justice" and "The First Responders."

 

Min received the 2019 Dosang Forensic Culture Award for her work on "Partners for Justice." The award is given to members of the media and cultural fields who have played a cultural role in promoting forensic medicine.

 

The drama will be directed by Park Yu-young, who directed "The Kidnapping Day" and "To My Beloved Thief."
