SEOUL, October 3 (Yonhap) --The Hackberry tree in South Gyeongsang Province, Changwon, which got the spotlight through the drama "Extraordinary Attorney Woo", became a natural monument,

The Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea announced on Monday that it had decided to designate the "Changwon Hackberry tree" as a natural monument after final deliberation at the meeting of the Cultural Heritage Committee of the Natural Monuments Division.

The Cultural Heritage Administration will officially publish the information on October 7.

The hackberry tree in Bukbu-ri, Daesan-myeon, Uichang-gu, Changwon-si is estimated to be about 500 years old.

It is located at the top of the open village, with a height of 16m and a circumference of 6.8m for ordinary adults (based on about 1.2m). It was designated as a nurse tree in 2015.

The width of the crown, which refers to the maximum width of the tree with branches and leaves, is estimated to be about 27m. Among the same type of hackberry, it belongs to a relatively large and old tree and is considered to be of high value.

This tree has long been the center of the Eastern Village community. It is also of great academic and historical value in that it continues the village's unique traditions, such as continuing the Dangsanje Festival for more than 90 years to date.

The tree was called the "Sodeok-dong Hackberry tree" in the drama "Extraordinary Attorney Woo," depicting the development of an attorney with autism spectrum disorder, and the tree protected the town as it was designated as a natural monument during the situation of conflicts regarding road construction.

An official from the Cultural Heritage Administration said, "From the designated investigation stage, the Cultural Heritage Administration, Changwon City, and villagers formed a joint consultative body to solve the inconvenience caused by the increase in visitors and come up with protective measures considering the growth environment."

An event to celebrate the designation of the tree as a natural monument will be held on October 12, around the Hackberry tree.
