SEOUL, June 19 (Yonhap) -- A weeklong event celebrating the history and cultural heritage of the ancient Baekje Kingdom will be held in three former capitals where traces of the kingdom still remain.
The Korea Heritage Service said Friday it will host the ninth Baekje Cultural Heritage Week from July 6-12 in Gongju and Buyeo in South Chungcheong Province and Iksan in North Jeolla Province.
The annual event commemorates the 2015 inscription of the Baekje Historic Areas on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The heritage site includes Gongju's Gongsanseong Fortress and the Tomb of King Muryeong, the Gwanbuk-ri archaeological site in Buyeo and Mireuksa Temple Site in Iksan.
Museums in each city will host nighttime concerts under the theme of "Nocturne."
Visitors will be able to hear stories about relics and artifacts tied to the history of the Baekje capitals while enjoying performances blending classical and traditional Korean music in a tranquil evening atmosphere.
The concerts will begin in Gongju on July 8, followed by Iksan on July 9 and Buyeo on July 11.
Starting this year, attendance will be determined through a lottery system. Applications can be submitted through the event's website from 10 a.m. on June 22 until 6 p.m. on June 26.
Gongsanseong Fortress in Gongju will host historical experience programs focusing on the period when Baekje established its capital in Ungjin, present-day Gongju, and the stories behind its royal buildings.
Buyeo will showcase media art recreating Baekje cultural heritage through virtual reality, while Iksan will offer a stamp tour program allowing visitors to explore the city's major historical sites.
