SEOUL, March 4 (Yonhap) — Amorepacific said on Wednesday it has received international recognition for its sunscreen development capabilities for a second time, further strengthening its scientific credibility in the global sun care market.
Amid rising consumer interest in sunscreens, performance differences among products and the reliability of testing methods have emerged as key issues in domestic and overseas markets. In particular, transparency and objectivity in how SPF and PA ratings are derived — including the standards and procedures used — have become increasingly important.
Against this backdrop, cosmetics companies have been participating in internationally accredited proficiency testing programs to ensure the objectivity and reproducibility of their sunscreen evaluation results.
Amorepacific’s R&I Center said it has continuously advanced its ultraviolet protection evaluation system based on international standards and recently received a “satisfactory” rating in a sunscreen proficiency test organized by France-based BIPEA.
BIPEA is a globally recognized provider of proficiency testing programs, and the result indicates that Amorepacific’s sunscreen evaluation capabilities meet international standards and have secured a high level of reliability, the company said.
The certified evaluation method is ISO 24443, an international standard test method used to assess ultraviolet A protection performance. ISO 24443 evaluates UVA protection in vitro and is widely adopted in global markets, including Europe.
In the BIPEA proficiency test, Amorepacific derived UVA protection indices for three blind samples with high accuracy, reaffirming the reliability and consistency of its data through an external expert organization.
Separately, the R&I Center has also newly established a testing system based on ISO 23675, the latest international standard for measuring SPF values. ISO 23675 is designed to assess sun protection performance more precisely and stably in laboratory settings.
Through the introduction of this system, Amorepacific said it has confirmed that it manages and verifies the reliability of sunscreen product evaluations at an international level from the research and development stage.
An official at the R&I Center said the company has long operated a UV protection evaluation system grounded in international standards while developing world-class sun care products.
“This proficiency assessment is a meaningful achievement in that it objectively reconfirmed the accuracy and reproducibility of our evaluation results through an external specialized institution,” the official said.
“Since sunscreens are products used daily to protect skin health, it is important to responsibly manage not only product performance but also the accuracy and reliability of the numerical values presented,” the official added. “We will continue striving to provide high-quality sun care products that customers can choose with confidence, placing skin health as our top priority.”
Meanwhile, Amorepacific has continued to advance its UV protection technology since developing Korea’s first sunscreen, “Parasol Cream,” in 1959. Based on its technological expertise, the company has been certified as a “World-Class Product Producer” in the sunscreen category and is expanding its presence in the global sun care market on the back of its accumulated heritage in Korea.
