SEOUL, July 11 (Yonhap) -- Latin music star DY, widely known for his global hit "Despacito" with Luis Fonsi, has resumed his music career under HYBE Latin America, the company announced Thursday.

According to HYBE, DY, who previously went by the stage name Daddy Yankee and announced his retirement in 2023, has joined HYBE Latin America and released a new single titled "Sonríele," marking his official return to the music scene.

Debuting in 1995, DY rose to global prominence with the 2004 smash hit "Gasolina," which helped ignite the worldwide popularity of reggaeton. His collaboration with Luis Fonsi on "Despacito" in 2017 spent a record-tying 16 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.

DY surprised fans by announcing his retirement after completing a tour following the release of his seventh studio album in 2022. At the time, he said in a farewell video, "I am finally looking at the finish line," hinting at a reevaluation of his life journey and childhood dreams.

However, HYBE Latin America persistently encouraged DY to return, sharing its musical vision and discussing plans for global activities. As a result, DY decided to sign with the label and released "Sonríele," a Spanish-language track meaning "Offer a Smile."

Regarding the song, DY stated, "No one is perfect, but we must still smile through it. I wanted to convey a message not to give up, to be grateful for the little things, and never let anyone take away your joy."

HYBE Latin America has recently signed several well-known Latin artists, including Meme del Real, Adrián Cota, Daniel García Treviño, and América Fernández. Last month, the company launched the band audition program "Pase a la Fama" and is set to unveil the reality competition "SANTOS BRAVOS" next month, which will determine the members of a new five-member boy group.
