SEOUL, March 22 (Yonhap) -- Due to the aftermath of the conflict surrounding the expansion of medical school quota, The broadcast of the medical drama "Wise Resident Life" has been postponed.
A tvN official stated on the 21st, "Originally, 'Wise Resident Life' was scheduled to be broadcast in the first half of this year, but considering various circumstances, it has been decided to broadcast it in the second half of the year." The specific broadcast timing has not yet been determined.
When asked if this decision was due to the recent conflict between the government and doctors over the expansion of medical schools, the official responded, "That aspect was also considered."
"Wise Resident Life" is a spin-off of the "Wise Doctor Life" series, which aired seasons 1 and 2 in 2020 and 2021, respectively, sharing the same world view but featuring different characters as protagonists.
In the previous "Wise Doctor Life" series, actors Jo Jung Suk, Jung Kyung Ho, and Yoo Yeon Seok portrayed specialists at the fictional Yulje Medical Center. "Wise Resident Life" focuses on the hospital life centered around a first-year resident in the obstetrics and gynecology department played by Go Yoon Jung.
The casting and production news for this project were announced in September last year. However, after the government announced its policy to expand medical schools, doctors took collective action, and there were criticisms suggesting that "Wise Resident Life" glorified doctors, along with criticisms aimed at doctors.
On the 8th of last month, tvN even suspended the comment function on a promotional video for "Wise Resident Life" uploaded to YouTube, as it was flooded with comments criticizing the drama and doctors.
