SEOUL, Dec, 21 (Yonhap) -- As controversy over historical inaccuracies in JTBC series "Snowdrop" is snowballing, advertisement firms and sponsors have decided to draw out from the drama.
The historical drama depicts the love between college student Young-ro (Jisoo) and Su-ho (Jung Hae-in) who jumps into a girls' college dormitory covered in blood.
But there were criticisms that Su-ho, a spy from North Korea getting protected by the college students who were the main pillars of the pro-democracy movement in South Korea was troublesome. As the criticism spread, companies have hastened to halt advertising and sponsoring their products.
"We sincerely apologize for the recent issue about our sponsorship. Although our sponsorship was a mere exposing of our product not a production made for the series, we have rearranged to stop advertising during that period," said functional tea brand Teazen on the 20th through its website.
"We want to make sure that we have nothing to do with producing the drama,” added the brand.
"We received a number of messages regarding our sponsorship for 'Snowdrop.' We apologize to all those who were offended by the controversy over historical distort. As pre-recording has already been finished, it is hard to lift all our advertisements. But we will request to the drama officials to stop advertising and adding our name to the sponsorship list starting from the next episode," said Han's Appliance through its website.
"We received a call to sponsor an electronic fireplace for the series last year. As our company is operated by a small number of people, there wasn't an official in charge of tracking down information related to the matter. We did not have a chance to be aware of the series' plot," explained the company.
Companies related to the series in controversy have emphasized that they were not informed in advance of the plot that has raised the recent critical comments.
"First of all, we apologize to all those who were deeply disappointed by the incorrect depiction of our history. At the time we were requested to sponsor for the series, we were not informed of the drama's script or synopsis at all," said fashion brand Ganisong.
"As it was 100% produced in advance, we are unable to perfectly cover up our products but will continually take measures to not expose them."
"We noticed many people's concern that drama 'Snowdrop' may be distorting the history of Korea's pro-democracy movement and can embellish Agency for National Security Planning. So, we asked for withdrawal of our sponsorship. We sincerely apologize for sponsoring products into making a drama that can lead to historical distort," said food company Ssarijai.
“We received a call from the manager in charge of props. Although we can’t fix the already released parts, the producers will make changes from the 3rd episode,” explained Ssarijai through an additional announcement.
“We apologize to all those offended by historical distortion. We have sent a cancellation request of our company logo to the official who asked for our sponsorship and have taken back all the products,” posted pottery manufacturer Dopyeon-yo on their blog.
“We never heard of the drama’s script or plot and was not in the condition to go through the request in details,” explained the manufacturer.
